The question of why women and minorities are under-represented in mathematics is complex and there are no simple answers, only many contributing factors. I will draw on a combination of precise mathematical reasoning, techniques of abstract mathematical thinking, and my experiences as a woman in the male-dominated field of mathematics. I will argue that if we focus character traits rather than gender we can have a more productive and less divisive conversation, about math and beyond. I will present a new theory for doing so, showing that we can use abstract mathematical thinking to work towards a more inclusive society in this politically divisive era

New Insights into Rheumatoid Arthritis: How Self-Testing Could Revolutionize the Fight Against Autoimmune Diseases

Speaker: Dana Orange, M.D., M.Sc., Assistant Professor of Clinical Investigation at Rockefeller and Assistant Attending Rheumatologist at the Hospital for Special Surgery

Thursday, October 13, 2022; 7:30 AM Coffee; 8:00–9:00 AM Lecture

More than 1.3 million people in the U.S. suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation, debilitating pain, and irreversible joint damage, among other symptoms. Notably, women are twice as likely as men to develop rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune conditions. What are the factors that lead to this prevalence in women? And how can we better predict and prevent flare-ups in arthritis and other inflammatory disorders?

Dr. Dana Orange, MD, MSc, is an Assistant Attending Rheumatologist at HSS and Assistant Professor at Rockefeller University. She received her medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University, and her MSc from Rockefeller University. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and her Rheumatology fellowship at HSS. Dr. Orange's research aims to understand the molecular underpinnings of symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis such as pain, morning stiffness, and flares.
